This is the family of my great-grandfather (my father’s father’s father), Hiram Carroll Brinlee, Jr., and his first wife, Diza Carolina Boone. Hiram was the son of Hiram Carroll Brinlee, Sr., and Elizabeth Ann “Betsey” McKinney, a niece of Collin McKinney. Diza was the daughter of Alonzo Havington Boone, the granddaughter of Daniel Morgan Boone, and the great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone. On the 1870 census Hiram and Diza are shown in Bates County, Missouri, and on the 1880 census they are back in Collin County, Texas.

Missing information: I would like to find more information on “Doll” Brinlee’s first husband, Leander Scott, and Ambert Brinlee’s first wife, Susie Howard.

Brothers and Sisters: Louis Boone, Elizabeth Anne “Doll,” and Ambert Hatler Brinlee

Pictured above are three of my grandfather Lawrence Carroll Brinlee’s older half-siblings: from left to right, Louis Boone Brinlee (1882-1957), Elizabeth Anne “Doll” Brinlee (1866-1950), and Ambert Hatler Brinlee (1878-1964). You may remember “Doll” from my last Smile for the Camera entry; she was one of the two lovely young ladies in enormous hats in Smile for the Camera: Doll Brinlee and Nina Pounds. Doll, Bert, and Louis were three of the eight children of my great-grandfather Hiram Carroll “Dink” Brinlee, Jr. and his first wife, Diza Caroline Boone, a great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone. My grandfather was the oldest child of Hiram and Susan Elizabeth “Lizzie” Smith Bonner Brinlee. My uncle says that he was always very fond of his half-brother Louis.

I love the smiles on the three siblings’ faces in this photograph, the somewhat self-conscious stance of the two men, the disparity in height between Louis and Ambert, and most of all the family resemblance – you did notice those ears, didn’t you?

Smile for the Camera: Doll Brinlee and Nina Pounds

On the left is my great-aunt Elizabeth Ann “Doll” Brinlee and on the right is Nina Pounds. Doll Brinlee was the oldest daughter of Hiram Carroll “Dink” Brinlee and Eliza Caroline “Disa” Boone. Doll was born in 1866 and looks fairly young in this photograph, so I would guess it was made in the mid- to late 1880s. Her oldest daughter was born in 1884.

The first thing that strikes the viewer are the hats, but notice also the gloves and boots – Doll’s appear to be laced up and Nina’s appear to be buttoned up. My question for the experts out there is: Are these more likely to be Doll’s and Nina’s own duds or were they perhaps provided by the studio?

Doll was my grandfather Lawrence Carroll Brinlee’s older half-sister. Her mother was a great-granddaughter of Daniel Boone. (Yes, I know that’s a common myth among families with the name of Boone, but in this case it’s the real deal and easy to show. Besides, no glory to me – my grandfather’s mother was my great brick wall, Susan Elizabeth Smith Bonner Brinlee.)
