Wordy Wednesday: Volunteer Gourd

... aka "Squumpkin." So tagged by my husband, who noticed that a volunteer squash/cucurbit-type plant was growing along the edge of the wall on one side of our yard: "What is it, a squash, or pumpkin, or ...?" Now he is babying "Squumpkin" along, and soon we'll have ... lots of decorative gourds.

  1. My 3 y/o daugher is absolutely fascinated with these pictures! She asked me, "What dat?" I told her it's a gourd, to which she announced, "Cute!" She's convinced that it "fall down," despite my telling her it grows that way.

I guess I need to get my kid outdoors to see more nature! We don't typically get wild gourds growing here, unfortunately.

  2. That is so sweet! At first we didn't know what it was, either, but when I saw that the fruit continued to be hard, I knew it was a gourd. Last Saturday one of the booths at our local farmers market was selling some gourds, and we saw this type of gourd in the bin - it was definitely the strangest looking of all the gourds!
