This is the family of John A. Kern and Julia Koehl, who was the sister of my husband’s great-grandfather Harry Koehl and the daughter of Julius Koehl and Josephine Lochner. I do not know whether John and Julia had any children in addition to Julius Henry. I suspect that John Kern may have been a relative of Philip Kern, who married Julia’s sister Augusta M. “Gussie” Koehl. This family was living in Brooklyn at the time of the 1920 census, but by the 1930 census had moved to Bergen County, New Jersey.

This is the family of Robert Brown Sims, son of Robert Sims and Nancy Nichols, and Margaret Leek Brinlee, daughter of Hiram Carroll Brinlee Sr. and Elizabeth Ann McKinney.

Daughter Mary Ann married her first cousin James Edward Brinlee, who was the son of my great-grandfather Hiram Carroll Brinlee Jr. and his first wife, Diza Caroline Boone.

Son George is a bit of a mystery. The story goes that when he was about 18 to 20 years old, he left on horseback with a couple of other men. The other men returned after a few days with his horse and saddle but without him. They claimed that they had bought the horse and saddle from him but did not know where he went. He was never seen by his family again.

This is the family of my grandfather Lawrence Carroll Brinlee’s half-sister Geneva Helen Brinlee. She was the youngest child of Hiram Carroll Brinlee, Jr. and Diza Caroline Boone. As you can see, I am still missing a lot of information on this family (though I do have at least approximate dates of birth for the children, which I have not included since they might conceivably still be living).

This is the family of my grandfather Kirby Runion Moore’s brother, Luther Lee Moore, and Ethel Clara England. Luther’s parents were Harlston Perrin Moore and Martha E. Lewis; Ethel’s parents were Horace England and Margaret Bell.

I have removed the dates of birth for the children, because some of them may still be alive. I do not have any dates of death for them, either, and there are in general quite a few gaps in my information on them.

Some time between 1926 and 1930 this family moved from the Dallas, Texas area to Arizona.

This is the family of my grandfather Kirby Runion Moore’s brother, Claude Moore, and Dona Pearl Phillips. Claude’s parents were Harlston Perrin Moore and Martha E. Lewis; Dona’s parents were David and Henrietta Phillips (her maiden name may have been Creel).

I have removed the dates of birth for the children, because there is a slight chance that a couple of the younger children may still be alive. I do not have any dates of death for them, either, and there are in general quite a few gaps in my information on them.

In 1920 this family was living in Baylor County, Texas, so they would have been near the Kirby Runion Moore family. In 1930 the family lived in Wilbarger County, which is not far away.

Louis Boone Brinlee, youngest son of Hiram Carroll Brinlee and Diza Caroline Boone, was closest to my Grandfather Lawrence Carroll Brinlee in age among his older half-siblings and, according to my Uncle Bill Brinlee, was his favorite brother. According to him, Louis and Mollie moved out to California from Oklahoma in 1942, but sometime before my grandfather’s death in 1953 came back out to Texas to visit him, which made my grandfather very happy. They went together to visit the grave of their father Hiram. Clarence Oda Brinlee may have been Louis’ stepson.

Mary Jane "Mollie" Bennett was the daughter of John David Bennett and Exie Emmaline Casey.

I correspond with a couple of members of this family, but if there are any more of you out there, I would love to hear from you! You can contact me at my e-mail address, which can be found by going to my profile page (there is a link to that page in the About Me section to the left).

Ambert Hatler Brinlee, who was the half-brother of my grandfather Lawrence Carroll Brinlee, was the son of Hiram Carroll “Dink” Brinlee, Jr. and Diza Caroline Boone. Rosa Ella Roper was the daughter of Lemuel Frederick Hawkins Roper and Virginia Caroline Humphries. I believe that “Bert” was married to a Susan Howard prior to his marriage to Rosa; he and Susan may have married around 1898, but I do not know when she died or whether they had any children. After Rosa’s death he married Lydia Ellen Stroud.

|----b. ca 1899, Sicily

This is the family of my husband’s great-great-grandparents, Benedetto Davi and Maria Terzo. I know very little about this family, and most of what I know comes from: the Social Security application of Jennie Mary Davi Terrana, the New York Passenger Lists 1820-1947 on Ancestry, and a Terrana family history by Joseph F. de Rienzo (for the initial information on Jennie Davi). I also have the Naturalization Petition Certificate of Michael Davi, dated 11 February 1930. I believe this is Michele Davi, whose age was listed as 4 on the passenger list, since this Michael Davi was said to be 31 years old, so both point to a year of birth of 1898 or 1899.

Benedetto Davi came over some time before wife Maria Terzo (listed on the passenger record under her maiden name) and children Rosa, Giovanna, and Michele, who arrived in New York on 8 September 1903. Benedetto is listed as the relative whom they are to join upon arrival. Based on Maria’s age and that of her children, there were very likely other, older children.

William Leon Brinlee was the son of Hiram Carroll Brinlee, Jr. and Diza Caroline Boone. Myrtie Wilson was the daughter of W. A. Wilson and Lydia Short.

There are rumors that Vernon “Bun” Brinlee actually got married at one point while his parents were out of town but was too afraid to tell them, so he came home and lived with them as though he was still single. He is listed as single on the 1930 census and is living with his parents. There is at least one family tree that shows him married to a Mary Josephine McDonald on 17 September 1928, and I found a birth record on Ancestry in which a Mary Argos Brinlee is listed as the mother.

Bun and Square Brinlee continued to live on the family homestead after their parents died. Square acquired his nickname from being a square-dance caller, and Bun was apparently short for “Bunnen” (?=Vernon). They led an exciting life and worked in many different jobs: shoeing horses, farming, rodeo circuit rider, gunsmith, barber, and others. The story went that they themselves owned no guns and would allow no hunting on their farm (which did not have any electricity or other modern conveniences), but this was apparently a fiction they allowed people to believe; people who visited them as kids (their place was a favorite hangout to hear stories of the old days) said that they were allowed to hunt and fish. A book was written about them by Dr. Joseph Faulds called Conversations with Kid Cougar and Lim Hang High.

Laura Lee Brinlee was the daughter of Hiram Carroll Brinlee, Jr. and Diza Carolina Boone, and James Larkin was the son of George Washington Arrington and Hannah Hendrix. It appears that Laura was born in Missouri, though the sources are divided between Missouri and Texas: earlier censuses indicate Missouri, while later censuses and her death certificate indicate Texas. Her parents were living in Boone Township, Bates County, Missouri at the time of the 1870 census. (Her younger brother, William Leon “Hoss” Brinlee, was born in Texas in 1873.)

Jim and Laura’s daughter Bernice “Bessie” Ann Arrington was apparently killed in a homicide-robbery in 1952.

Elizabeth Anne Brinlee was the second child of Hiram Carroll Brinlee Jr. and Diza Caroline Boone. Harvey Mulder was the son of George D. Mulder and Angeline Walker. Harvey’s first wife was Eveline Langham; they had children George Monroe, Elizabeth (who apparently died as an infant), Oscar, and James Calvin.

There are several mysteries, or at least some missing information, connected with this family. To begin with, I do not know anything about Leander Scott – parents, dates, or what happened to him. Doll Brinlee was a widow when she married Harve Mulder, so Leander Scott must have died some time between 1884, when his daughter Lora Mae was born, and 1887, the approximate year when Harve Mulder and Elizabeth Brinlee Scott married.

I also do not know what happened to Lora Mae, though it appears she had died by 1910, since the 1910 census indicates that one of Doll Mulder’s children had died by then, and the others are accounted for. I do not know when Lora Mae Scott died or whether she had married before she died.

The final mystery is who the parents are of the Duckworth grandchildren living with Harve and Doll on the 1910 and 1920 censuses, as well as an adopted Duckworth daughter shown with them on the 1930 census:

Claud/Cloyd and Roy Duckworth, grandsons, both age 9, are living with the family on the 1910 census.

Claud, grandson, age 19, and Jessie, granddaughter, age 15, are living with the family on the 1920 census.

Lora, adopted daughter, age 9, is shown with the family on the 1930 census.

Might Claud, Roy, and Jessie be children of Lora Mae Scott (they would have been the right ages – born between 1901 and 1905 – to have been her children)? And perhaps Lora was the daughter of Claud or Roy?
