What Happened to All the Blogs I Was Following in Google Reader?

I follow a lot of blogs. Each day Google Reader usually brings me anywhere from 120-180 unread posts.

Yesterday and today that number dropped to the 60s.

Did I infect everyone with my cleaning frenzy so that you are all taking time off from blogging to clean house and organize your offices?

I didn't think so.

Not that I'm paranoid or anything. Well, yes, I am paranoid. And I hate change - there, I said it.

I hate Google Reader's new look and the nightmare that it has become to navigate. Those scroll bars? Much clunkier than the old arrows, and it seems almost impossible to navigate up and down my subscription list.

As I read my 63 unread items today, I checked to make sure that it wasn't just Blogger-platform blogs that are included. Wordpress and private sites are there. So which blogs aren't there? I can't figure it out.

Where is my tinfoil hat?

I miss my blogs!

Any suggestions on other readers?

  1. Oops - I don't know whether to be even more paranoid or grateful - I returned to Google Reader and 62 new posts were there. It must be the mess boys....

  2. I'm glad you got your blogs back ;-)

Agree wholeheartedly with you on the "new" look of Google Reader... I keep wanting to click in the lower left corner instead of upper right to get to the next blog. Aaargh.

  3. I'm still reading from my dashboard, not google reader proper. Or sometimes from my iGoogle home page where I have a reader window.

  4. Yuck on the new changes. They're fine when I'm on my desktop, which has a large monitor, but on my netbook (which I use during the day in the kitchen while the kids are eating) the mandated "spaciousness" of the new design means that very little fits on the tiny screen. It's an un-improvement in my mind. I hate the new Gmail interface too... and this from an inveterate praiser of all things Google... =P

  5. I will say that your talk of cleaning frenzy did inspire me to try and get more organized...both home-wise and genealogy-wise :)

  6. I also still read from my dashboard. I tried the reader but it seems not to be as easy as my dashboard.

I did check for the "new" email and it would momentarily appear and then poof, it was gone.

It took me a long time to get the old style to reappear. I can not even remember how I did that trick.

  7. I thought it was just me that didn't like the new Google Reader, but I asked my son and he doesn't like it either! It's harder to read, but I guess I'll just have to get used to it ..... or suffer Reader Withdrawel Syndrome!! :o)

  9. Becky - It's even hard to see where the navigation bars are. Ick!

Carol - I used to read from my dashboard all the time, but I found the reader faster. However, if it doesn't deliver all of the posts (and I don't think it is, yet) - what's the point?

Jennifer - I've avoided switching to the new Gmail interface; I imagine I'll hate it.

Dawn - Well, that's something good! Hope all is going well with that!

Claudia - There just seems to be so many garbage features that go with the changes, and the new look doesn't help me at all!

Lisa - Yeah, I can probably live with the stupid changes, it's just the dropping subscriptions that make me crazy.

  10. You are not alone.... I am so upset. Reader is now virtually useless: I can't bear to even try to use it, I think I've got 300+ unread right now. I tried a question to Help, but that got nothing except a suggestion for a lengthy work-around. Why should I use a work around when I didn't change anything?! Thanks for the chance to vent.

  13. MHD - You gotta wonder: if they want people to use their products, why do they do stuff like this? I still don't have the number of unread posts that I used to - and I can't figure out which blogs are being left out.

Joan - No, as you can see from the comments, there are at least a few of us - and I suspect there are more who are unhappy or at least wonder why someone considered this change an improvement.

  14. Greta, I am having problems, too. In fact, this post of yours just came into my Google Reader today. That's quite a backlog.

I hope they fix things soon, because I definitely don't like the delay!

  15. Amy - This weekend, when I have been at home so that I can read my posts a couple of times a day - once in the morning and once in the evening - the numbers seem to get back to normal. It looks like Google Reader doesn't want to deal with much more than 100 unread posts. Hate this! Also accidentally got into the new Google Mail view (hitting unread posts on iGoogle) - icky - no exact count of number of messages, no dates.
