Also appreciate the description 'dedicated amateurs' - related to our discussion over on Leslies' post and discussions (http://thejourneytakers.blogspot.com/2011/04/hobbyists-in-our-midst.html).

I guess I'm an ABD [D=Certification]in G/FH/LH along with my Ph.D in academe... While the comparison is interesting, the 'subject matter' is so different (we each have a TOTALLY different family tree, in most cases) it is difficult to draw similarities, it seems to me.

As I suggested before, I hope this conversation continues... ;-)Dr. Bill (William L.) Among all of the RootsTech-induced frenzy and hoopla, I have wanted to address the temptation to let the pendulum swing too far away from scholarship - sources, proofs, and all the rest. While I believe that people who have unique information to contribute should be welcomed into the genealogy community, somebody, somewhere, at some time has to take that information and subject it to rigorous analysis and review.Greta Koehlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05429623811794360612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-1386557663582579032011-04-10T15:39:58.401-07:002011-04-10T15:39:58.401-07:00One thing I wish genealogy had that academia does ...One thing I wish genealogy had that academia does have are working papers. I'd love to write a scholarly article, post it, have comments made on it for improvement and whether I made my point or not. Genealogy doesn't have that. Whereas academia has NBER and other sites to do just that for social sciences.

I have also found than in genealogy, sharing is a bit like doing a class project in college. You want an A, but your partners are happy with a B or C. So you do the lion's share and the others reap the reward of your hard work. So there's sharing and sharing.Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17205797878738290997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-60562772870407962142011-04-08T13:25:27.623-07:002011-04-08T13:25:27.623-07:00Bravo, Greta! In the academic (or corporate world that Kerry refers to) people are in competition with each other: who will get tenure, move up from associate professor to professor? Who publishes more? Who's climbing the corporate ladder more quickly and getting the plum positions, bigger budgets and so on. We bloggers are mostly doing this for fun (of course the professional genealogists have to make a living -- and we saw the hullabaloo about citations a while back--so a sense of elitism exist for some). Still overall, we are a sharing community and the interest we take in each others' work is nourishing. So thanks again for a thoughtful post -- and for your comment on my blogpost too!Linda Gartzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00740477693031139484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-27568207896588511772011-04-04T12:48:49.368-07:002011-04-04T12:48:49.368-07:00Thank you for the mention...and I LOVE the post. ...Thank you for the mention...and I LOVE the post.
