Using the leaf hints I gather additional information that I may not already have and connections to trees created by other members. I can then aggregate all this data to see whether I can prove (at least up to Gen. Proof. Stds.) that this is a valid connection (or not).

When I'm done I'll either add the new members and data to my tree (if proven) or discard the old tree if a relation was inconclusive.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-14268410098333498752013-01-07T06:39:58.705-08:002013-01-07T06:39:58.705-08:00I never thought to do this and have only checked o...I never thought to do this and have only checked out a few of the matches on the Ancestry DNA. And I agree that it's important for one of our "tree" databases - Ancestry, personal program, whatever - to be an area where we can include our own speculations and even those of other researchers. Hope I can continue to "work" the DNA angle to help my research, because some of these lines can definitely use the help!Greta Koehlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05429623811794360612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-14914709785133320502013-01-02T17:08:37.973-08:002013-01-02T17:08:37.973-08:00Thanks, Lori - I can't wait to see how the who...Thanks, Lori - I can't wait to see how the whole DNA thing develops!Greta Koehlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05429623811794360612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-17877658774216705892013-01-02T16:12:36.412-08:002013-01-02T16:12:36.412-08:00What a great post - and I love Bart's terminol...What a great post - and I love Bart's terminology "research locker". I always hesitate to even talk about my tree on Ancestry, because it's a mis-mash of things...things that are possibilities, thing that I want to follow up on etc. I'm much more selective about what goes into by database, but for me Ancestry is my playground.

Good luck with your DNA searching - I really want to understand this better, but haven't yet done much with it. It was very helpful to read what you are doing to pursue these leads.Diana Ritchiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05954839264299339937noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-70764208514842363752013-01-01T18:49:10.517-08:002013-01-01T18:49:10.517-08:00Good luck, Greta! Even if the particular family where we connect with our matches is not quite right, we can hope that a combination of research and further DNA results will point us in the right direction.Greta Koehlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05429623811794360612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-14528973134671600532012-12-30T10:11:43.124-08:002012-12-30T10:11:43.124-08:00Greta, I am doing the same with my "DNA tree....Greta, I am doing the same with my "DNA tree." I have DNA connections that match branches that I am sure belong in my tree- I just don't have enough documentation to support the branches. Glad to read that you have been lead down the same path and are handling it this way also.Jody Lutterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01166860142168646494noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-16747220356361671722012-12-29T07:23:32.079-08:002012-12-29T07:23:32.079-08:00Thanks, Dee! I think having DNA tests on one side is very useful (especially when more than one person has tested), as you can focus just on those lines; if you eventually take the test, you will have a good instrument for dividing up your matches. The process may look pretty tedious, but I have to admit to being a bit of a statistics geek.Greta Koehlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05429623811794360612noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5324800784948486726.post-47058433337691996512012-12-29T07:01:42.401-08:002012-12-29T07:01:42.401-08:00Thanks for the vote of confidence, Bart! I do hope to "fix the tree up" in coming years, but I am thinking even now that I should have had something like this long ago, and I like your description of a "research locker." What some may call a "junk"...Nicely done. What some may call a "junk" tree, others of us call early research leads. After being hacked, I am rebuilding our TNG website. I have uploaded my full RootsMagic GEDCOM. It has unconfirmed connections and people who have been pulled from undocumented online trees. This is my research locker, filled with people and connections who are waiting to be either confirmed or rejected. Of course, that probably gives me 10 or 15 years of work to do.
